Rule 66: Use of What with Plural Verb
What ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ those which ਜਾਂ the things which ਦੇ ਅਰਥ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਣ ਤੇ ਇਸਦੇ ਨਾਲ Plural Verb ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Explanation
- What refers to multiple items or plural things.
- ਇਸ ਲਈ Verb ਵੀ Plural ਹੋਣਾ ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ ਹੈ।
- Singular Verb ਵਰਤਣਾ ਗਲਤ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।
Example:
- He needn’t get any more books, what he has are quite sufficient.
ਇਸ sentence ਵਿੱਚ What ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ those which ਜਾਂ the things which ਦੇ ਅਰਥ ਨਾਲ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ verb are ਜੋ plural ਹੈ, ਆਉਣਾ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਸਹੀ ਹੈ।

Rule 67: Hardly, Scarcely, Rarely, Seldom, Never
ਅਗਰ Sentences ਇਹਨਾਂ words ਤੋਂ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤਾਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ Negative ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ words ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੇ sentence ਵਿੱਚ Inversion ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਰਥਾਤ Verb ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ Subject ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ Verb ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਇਸਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਵਰਤੇ Subject ਦੇ Number ਅਤੇ Person ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ:-
- Hardly does he go to school.
ਹੁਣ ਇਸ sentence ਵਿੱਚ Hardly ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ sentence ਵਿੱਚ Inversion ਨੂੰ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ Verb ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਲੱਗੇ Subject He ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਇੱਕ Singular noun ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ Singular Verb does ਦਾ ਆਉਣਾ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਸਹੀ ਹੈ।

ਇਹ sentence ਗਲਤ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਸ sentence ਵਿੱਚ Singular Subject He ਦੇ ਨਾਲ Plural Verb ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ sentence ਨੂੰ ਦਰੁਸਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ Singular Verb ਦਾ ਆਉਣਾ ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ ਹੈ।
- Seldom do they visit the library.
ਇਹ sentence ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਸਹੀ ਹੈ। ਜਦੋਂ sentence Seldom ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਇਸਦਾ ਅਰਥ Negative ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ sentences ਵਿੱਚ Inversion ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਅਰਥਾਤ Verb subject ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇੱਥੇ subject They plural ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ plural verb do ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਸਹੀ ਹੈ।

ਜਦੋਂ ਦੋ verbs not only… but also ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗਤ ਹੋਣ ਅਤੇ sentence ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ Not only ਨਾਲ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਇਸਦੇ ਨਾਲ Inversion ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਰਥਾਤ Verb ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ Subject ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। Not only ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ Verb ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਉਸਦੇ ਵਾਅਦ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ Subject ਦੇ Number ਅਤੇ Person ਦੇ ਮੁਤਾਬਿਕ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

No sooner ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੇ sentence ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ Inversion ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। No sooner ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ Verb ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਉਸਦੇ ਵਾਅਦ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ Subject ਦੇ Number ਅਤੇ Person ਦੇ ਮੁਤਾਬਿਕ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Much, much more, little, less ਅਤੇ much less ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ Quality (ਮਾਤਰਾ) ਨੂੰ refer ਕਰਨ ਲਈ Adjective of Quantity ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ sentence ਦੇ Subject ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਇਸਦੇ ਨਾਲ Singular Verb ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
