• President Droupadi Murmu appointed senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Dinesh Sharma as the new Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He succeeds retired Admiral D.K. Joshi, who served in the post for nearly nine years since October 2017. Dr. Sharma, 62, previously served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh (2017–2022) and has also functioned as a Vice-Chairperson on the panel of the Rajya Sabha. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands serve as a vital geopolitical outpost, housing India’s sole tri-service theater command (Andaman and Nicobar Command) near critical international maritime trade routes.
• Indonesia’s Mount Anak Krakatau (located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra) experienced a major eruption on September 6, 2026, sending an ash plume up to 50,000 feet into the atmosphere. As of the June 2026 quarter, LIC held a 4.35% stake in ICICI Bank, giving it regulatory headroom to potentially more than double its holding up to the 9.99% cap. This follows a similar RBI nod granted to LIC in August 2026 to scale its stake up to 9.99% in HDFC Bank (where it held around 4.11%).
• Jeeraphool is a traditional, native short-grain aromatic rice indigenous to the northern hills agro-climatic region of Chhattisgarh (predominantly the Surguja and Balrampur districts). • India voted in favor of a UN General Assembly resolution (tabled by Togo) titled “Correct the Map: Rebalancing Global Cartographic Representation and Promotion of Equitable Representation of the World’s Regions, Particularly Africa.” The resolution encourages the global adoption of equal-area map projections (such as the Equal Earth projection) to correct historical size distortions found in traditional maps like the Mercator projection, which disproportionately magnifies landmasses in the Global North while shrinking Africa and other regions. The resolution passed overwhelmingly by 164 votes to 1, with the United States being the sole dissenting nation. • The second edition of Exercise Veer Guardian, a bilateral air-combat exercise between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF).
