  • Shashi Shekhar Vempati, former CEO of Prasar Bharati, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). As noted in previous current affairs, Prasoon Joshi became the Chairman of Prasar Bharati, succeeding Shashi Shekhar Vempati, who has now taken charge as the Chairperson of the CBFC.
  • The Punjab Government has acquired a pair of Asiatic lions and a pair of Royal Bengal tigers for its zoos. The tigers — male Badal and female Bijli — were brought from Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoological Park, Nagpur, and will be housed at the Tiger Safari in Ludhiana Zoo.
    A pair of Asiatic lions — male Dheera and female Chanchal — was brought from Rohtak Zoo and will be housed at Chhatbir Zoo, Zirakpur (Mohali). With this arrival, the total strength of lions in Chhatbir Zoo has become four.
    Additionally, Chhatbir Zoo witnessed the birth of three female cubs — Garima, Gunjan, and Ghazal — in November last year. With these additions, the total population of lions in Punjab has reached four, while the number of tigers in the state stands at seven.
  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) has signed a contract with the European missile maker MBDA for locally carrying out maintenance, repair, and mid‑life overhaul of MICA missiles. These missiles are carried by the Rafale jets and Mirage jets of the IAF.
    These missiles are classified as beyond‑visual‑range missiles and have a range of 80 km when fired from a jet in the air.
  • The Government of India under the Prime Minister of India has amended in the act of Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 to grant a status “Vande Mataram” the same statutory protection as the national anthem “Jana Gana Mana”. The amendment mandates the rendition of all six stanzas of the song at government events, schools, during the arrival and departure of the President of India, and in cinema halls, although people are not expected to stand.
    “Vande Mataram” the national song of India was written by renowned writter from Bengal Shri Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.
  • Ted Turner, the founder of CNN in 1980, who transformed the news business by launching CNN as a 24‑hour television news model, has died at the age of 87.
  • The Indian young boxers’ team won 27 medals at the Asian Championships (U‑15 and U‑17) held in Tashkent.
  • The IPL has announced its schedule for the three qualifiers and the final. Qualifier 1 will be held at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium, Dharamshala, on May 26. Qualifier 2 and the Eliminator will take place at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium, Mullanpur (Mohali), on May 27 and May 29, respectively. The final match of the IPL has been shifted from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad.
