In English grammar, Distributive Adjectives are words that refer to people or things separately, one at a time, or as individual members of a group. They help us talk about each person or thing individually rather than considering the group as a whole.

The main Distributive Adjectives are each, every, either, and neither when they are used before nouns.

Examples of Distributive Adjectives

  • Each girl has a book.
Each refers to every girl individually.
    ਹਰੇਕ ਕੁੜੀ ਕੋਲ ਇੱਕ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਹੈ।
  • Every man is emotional.
Every refers to all men individually, one by one.
    ਹਰ ਆਦਮੀ ਭਾਵੁਕ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
  • Either book is yours.
Either means one of the two books; either book is acceptable as your choice.
    ਦੋ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਇੱਕ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਹੈ।
  • Neither boy is present.
Neither means not one and not the other of two boys.
    ਦੋਵਾਂ ਮੁੰਡਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਹਾਜ਼ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।

In these sentences, each, every, either, and neither appear before the nouns girl, man, book, and boy. They specify how the nouns are considered.
ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਾਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ Each, Every, Either ਅਤੇ Neither ਕ੍ਰਮਵਾਰ Girl, Man, Book ਅਤੇ Boy ਨਾਂਵਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਆਏ ਹਨ।

Types and Uses of Distributive Adjectives

The four important Distributive Adjectives are Each, Every, Either, and Neither. Let us understand their meanings and uses one by one.

1. Each – ਹਰੇਕ / ਹਰ ਇੱਕ

Each refers to every person or thing separately. It is commonly used when we think of the members of a group individually.
Each ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਹਰੇਕ ਜਾਂ ਹਰ ਇੱਕ। ਇਸ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਸਮੂਹ ਦੇ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ-ਇੱਕ ਕਰਕੇ ਦਰਸਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

Examples:

  • Each student has a notebook.
    ਹਰੇਕ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਕੋਲ ਇੱਕ ਕਾਪੀ ਹੈ।
  • Each player received a medal.
    ਹਰੇਕ ਖਿਡਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਤਗਮਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ।
  • Each room has a window.
    ਹਰੇਕ ਕਮਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਖਿੜਕੀ ਹੈ।

When Each is used before a singular countable noun, the noun is singular and the verb is generally singular.
ਜਦੋਂ Each ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਇਕਵਚਨ ਗਿਣਨਯੋਗ ਨਾਂਵ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ Verb ਵੀ ਇਕਵਚਨ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

  • Example: Each boy has a pen. (Not: Each boy have a pen.)

2. Every – ਹਰ / ਹਰੇਕ

Every refers to all the members of a group individually. It emphasizes that no member is left out.
Every ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਹਰ ਜਾਂ ਹਰੇਕ। ਇਸ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਸਮੂਹ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ-ਇੱਕ ਕਰਕੇ ਦਰਸਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

Examples:

  • Every student must attend the class.
    ਹਰ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਲਈ ਕਲਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਾਜ਼ਰ ਹੋਣਾ ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ ਹੈ।
  • Every house has a door.
    ਹਰ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
  • Every candidate should bring an identity card.
    ਹਰ ਉਮੀਦਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਪੱਤਰ ਲਿਆਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।

Every is normally used before a singular countable noun and takes a singular verb.
Every ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਇਕਵਚਨ ਗਿਣਨਯੋਗ ਨਾਂਵ ਅਤੇ ਇਕਵਚਨ Verb ਵਰਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

  • Example: Every student is ready. (Not: Every students are ready.)

Difference Between Each and Every

Both Each and Every mean ਹਰ ਜਾਂ ਹਰੇਕ, but their emphasis is slightly different.

  • Each: Focuses on the individual members separately.
  • Every: Focuses on all members of a group, without leaving anyone out.

Examples:

  • Each student received a different task.
    ਹਰੇਕ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਕੰਮ ਮਿਲਿਆ।
  • Every student must follow the rules.
    ਹਰ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਲਈ ਨਿਯਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਨੀ ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ ਹੈ।

3. Either – ਦੋਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਇੱਕ

Either refers to one or the other of two people or things. It is used when there are two choices or possibilities.

Examples:

  • You can take either road.
    ਤੁਸੀਂ ਦੋਵਾਂ ਰਸਤਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਇੱਕ ਰਸਤਾ ਲੈ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ।
  • Either answer is correct.
    ਦੋਵਾਂ ਜਵਾਬਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਇੱਕ ਜਵਾਬ ਸਹੀ ਹੈ।
  • Either student can represent the class.
    ਦੋਵਾਂ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਇੱਕ ਕਲਾਸ ਦੀ ਨੁਮਾਇੰਦਗੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

Either is commonly used before a singular countable noun when referring to one of two alternatives. It normally takes a singular verb in this construction.

  • Example: Either option is suitable.

4. Neither – ਦੋਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ

Neither means not one and not the other of two people or things. It expresses a negative choice between two alternatives.
Neither ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਦੋਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ਇਸ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਦੋਵਾਂ ਵਿਕਲਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਕਾਰਨ ਲਈ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

Examples:

  • Neither answer is correct.
    ਦੋਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਜਵਾਬ ਸਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
  • Neither boy was absent.
    ਦੋਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਮੁੰਡਾ ਗੈਰ-ਹਾਜ਼ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।
  • Neither road leads to the village.
    ਦੋਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਪਿੰਡ ਤੱਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ।

Neither is normally used before a singular countable noun and takes a singular verb in this construction.
Neither ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਇਕਵਚਨ ਗਿਣਨਯੋਗ ਨਾਂਵ ਅਤੇ ਇਕਵਚਨ Verb ਵਰਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

  • Example: Neither student has completed the task.

Distributive Adjectives vs Distributive Pronouns

This is an important topic for competitive examinations.

The words Each, Either, and Neither can function as either adjectives (more precisely, determiners in modern grammar) or pronouns, depending on how they are used in a sentence.

Rule:

  • When the word comes before a noun and specifies that noun, it functions as a Distributive Adjective in traditional grammar.
  • When the word stands alone and replaces a noun or noun phrase, it functions as a Distributive Pronouns.
    ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕਿਸੇ Noun ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਇਕੱਲੇ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਾਂ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ Distributive Pronouns ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Examples of Distributive Adjectives

  • Each student has a book.
Each is used before the noun student, so it is a Distributive Adjective.
Each, Student ਨਾਂਵ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇਹ Distributive Adjective ਹੈ।
  • Either road is safe.
Either is used before the noun road, so it is a Distributive Adjective.
Either, Road ਨਾਂਵ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇਹ Distributive Adjective ਹੈ।
  • Neither answer is correct.
Neither is used before the noun answer, so it is a Distributive Adjective.
Neither, Answer ਨਾਂਵ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇਹ Distributive Adjective ਹੈ।

Examples of Distributive Pronouns

  • Each of the students has a book.
Here, Each is used independently in the expression each of the students, rather than directly before the noun students. In traditional school grammar, Each is classified as a Distributive Pronouns.
    ਇੱਥੇ Each, Students ਨਾਂਵ ਤੋਂ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ, ਸਗੋਂ each of the students ਵਿੱਚ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਰਵਾਇਤੀ ਸਕੂਲੀ ਵਿਆਕਰਨ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ Distributive Pronouns ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
  • You may take either.
Either stands alone and refers to one of two choices. Therefore, it is a Distributive Pronouns.
    ਇੱਥੇ Either ਇਕੱਲਾ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਦੋ ਵਿਕਲਪਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਇੱਕ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇਹ Distributive Pronouns ਹੈ।
  • Neither was selected.
Neither stands alone and means that not one of the two was selected. Therefore, it is a Distributive Pronouns.

Important Note: Every is not normally used alone as a pronoun. Use everyone or every one where appropriate.
Every ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਇਕੱਲੇ Pronoun ਵਜੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ। ਲੋੜ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ Everyone ਜਾਂ Every one ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰੋ।

  • Each of them has a ticket.
    ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਕੋਲ ਇੱਕ ਟਿਕਟ ਹੈ।

Rule 5: Either and Neither Normally Refer to Two

Either and Neither are generally used when referring to two people or things.

Examples:

  • Either of the two roads will take you there.
    ਦੋਵਾਂ ਰਸਤਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਇੱਕ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਉੱਥੇ ਲੈ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।
  • Neither of the two answers is correct.
