In English grammar, Possessive Adjectives are words that show ownership, relationship, or connection with a person or thing. They tell us whose person or thing we are talking about.
Words that show ownership, relationship, or connection and are used before a noun are called Possessive Adjectives.

  2. That is your pen.
  3. He loves his mother.
  4. She is wearing her dress.
  5. Our school is very big.
  6. Their house is beautiful.

In these sentences, my, your, his, her, our, and their are Possessive Adjectives. They are used before noun and show ownership or a relationship.
ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਾਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ my, your, his, her, our ਅਤੇ their Possessive Adjectives ਹਨ। ਇਹ Noun ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਲਕੀ ਜਾਂ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।

Rules for Using Possessive Adjectives

Let us understand the important rules of Possessive Adjectives with simple examples.
ਆਓ Possessive Adjectives ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਨਿਯਮ ਸੌਖੇ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਮਝੀਏ।

Rule 1: Possessive Adjectives Are Used Before Nouns

A Possessive Adjective is placed before the noun to show whose person or thing is being discussed.
Possessive Adjective ਨੂੰ ਉਸ Noun ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਮਾਲਕੀ ਜਾਂ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।

Examples:

  • This is my phone. — ਇਹ ਮੇਰਾ ਫ਼ੋਨ ਹੈ।
  • Your answer is correct. — ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਜਵਾਬ ਸਹੀ ਹੈ।
  • His father is a teacher. — ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਹਨ।
  • Her dress is beautiful. — ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸੂਟ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਹੈ।

In these sentences, phone, answer, father, and dress are nouns. The words my, your, his, and her appear before these nouns.
ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਾਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ phone, answer, father ਅਤੇ dress Nouns ਹਨ। my, your, his ਅਤੇ her ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ Nouns ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਵਰਤੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ।

Rule 2: Possessive Adjectives Do Not Change According to Singular or Plural Nouns

Possessive Adjectives generally remain the same whether the noun is singular or plural.
Noun ਇੱਕਵਚਨ ਹੋਵੇ ਜਾਂ ਬਹੁਵਚਨ, English ਵਿੱਚ Possessive Adjective ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਦਲਦਾ।

Examples:

  • My pen is blue. — ਮੇਰਾ ਪੈਨ ਨੀਲਾ ਹੈ।
  • My pens are blue. — ਮੇਰੇ ਪੈਨ ਨੀਲੇ ਹਨ।
  • Her book is new. — ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਨਵੀਂ ਹੈ।
  • Her books are new. — ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਨਵੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

Notice that my and her remain unchanged. Only the noun and other parts of the sentence change as needed.
ਧਿਆਨ ਦਿਓ ਕਿ my ਅਤੇ her ਦੋਵਾਂ ਵਾਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਹਨ। Noun ਦੇ ਇੱਕਵਚਨ ਜਾਂ ਬਹੁਵਚਨ ਹੋਣ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਦਲਦੇ।

Rule 3: Use the Correct Possessive Adjective According to the Owner

The choice of Possessive Adjective depends on the person or thing being referred to.
ਕਿਹੜਾ Possessive Adjective ਵਰਤਣਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਉਸ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਜਾਂ ਚੀਜ਼ ‘ਤੇ ਨਿਰਭਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

Examples:

  • I have a book. This is my book.
  • You have a pen. This is your pen.
  • He has a bicycle. This is his bicycle.
  • She has a bag. This is her bag.
  • We have a house. This is our house.
  • They have a car. This is their car.

For an animal or thing, its may be used to show possession.
Example: The cat is drinking its milk. — ਬਿੱਲੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਦੁੱਧ ਪੀ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।

Rule 4: His and Her Are Used According to the Person

His is used for a male person, while her is used for a female person when showing possession.
ਮਰਦ ਜਾਂ ਲੜਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਦੱਸਣ ਲਈ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ his ਅਤੇ ਔਰਤ ਜਾਂ ਲੜਕੀ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਦੱਸਣ ਲਈ her ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Examples:

  • Ravi has a pen. This is his pen. — ਰਵੀ ਕੋਲ ਇੱਕ ਪੈਨ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪੈਨ ਹੈ।
  • Simran has a book. This is her book. — ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੋਲ ਇੱਕ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਹੈ।

Remember that his and her depend on the person who owns or is associated with the thing, not on the gender of the noun being possessed.

For example:

  • He has a car. This is his car.
  • He has a house. This is his house.

The words car and house do not change the use of his.

Rule 5: Its Is Used for Animals and Things

Its is used to show possession by an animal, object, or other non-human thing when appropriate.
ਕਿਸੇ ਜਾਨਵਰ ਜਾਂ ਚੀਜ਼ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਦੱਸਣ ਲਈ its ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

Examples:

  • The dog is wagging its tail. — ਕੁੱਤਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਪੂਛ ਹਿਲਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
  • The bird is building its nest. — ਪੰਛੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਲ੍ਹਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ。
  • The company changed its name. — ਕੰਪਨੀ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਦਲ ਲਿਆ।

Important difference: Its and It’s

  • Its shows possession.
  • It’s is a short form of it is or it has.

Examples:

  • The dog is eating its food. (Possession)
  • It’s a beautiful day. (It is a beautiful day.)

Its ਮਾਲਕੀ ਜਾਂ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦਕਿ it’s ਦਾ ਅਰਥ it is ਜਾਂ it has ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਦੋਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਨਾ ਸਮਝੋ।

Rule 6: Do Not Use an Article Before a Possessive Adjective and Its Noun

In standard English, we do not normally use a, an, or the immediately before a possessive adjective when it modifies a noun.
ਜਦੋਂ Noun ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ Possessive Adjective ਵਰਤਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸੇ Noun ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ a, an ਜਾਂ the ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਾਉਂਦੇ।

  • This is my book. (Correct)
This is a my book. (Incorrect)
  • He lost his pen. (Correct)
He lost the his pen. (Incorrect)

The Possessive Adjective already identifies whose thing it is, so an additional article is not needed in these examples.
ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਾਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ Possessive Adjective ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਦੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਵੱਖਰੇ Article ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।

Rule 7: Possessive Adjectives Can Be Used with Family Relationships and Body Parts

Possessive Adjectives are commonly used with family members, body parts, clothes, and personal belongings.
ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ ਰਿਸ਼ਤਿਆਂ, ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਗਾਂ, ਕੱਪੜਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ Possessive Adjectives ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

Examples:

  • I love my mother. — ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ/ਕਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ।
  • She washed her hands. — ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥ ਧੋਤੇ।
  • He hurt his leg. — ਉਸ ਦੀ ਲੱਤ ‘ਤੇ ਸੱਟ ਲੱਗੀ।
  • We respect our teachers. — ਅਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਧਿਆਪਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
  • They cleaned their room. — ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਕਮਰਾ ਸਾਫ਼ ਕੀਤਾ।

These words show the relationship between the person and the family member, body part, or belonging.
ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ ਮੈਂਬਰ, ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਗ ਜਾਂ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।

Difference Between Possessive Adjectives and Possessive Pronouns

Possessive Adjectives and Possessive Pronouns both show possession, but they are used differently.
ਦੋਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦੀ ਮਾਲਕੀ ਜਾਂ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

A Possessive Adjective is used before a noun. A Possessive Pronoun replaces a noun phrase and can be used without repeating the noun.
Possessive Adjective Noun ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦਕਿ Possessive Pronoun Noun ਨੂੰ ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਲਿਖਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Possessive AdjectivePossessive Pronoun
This is my book. This book is mine.
This is your pen. This pen is yours.
That is his car. That car is his.
This is her bag. This bag is hers.
This is our house. This house is ours.
That is their room. That room is theirs.

Examples explained:

  • In This is my book, the word my is followed by the noun book, so it is a Possessive Adjective.
  • In This book is mine, the word mine stands in place of my book, so it is a Possessive Pronoun.

This is my book ਵਿੱਚ my ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ book Noun ਆਇਆ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ my Possessive Adjective ਹੈ। ਪਰ This book is mine ਵਿੱਚ mine ਇਕੱਲਾ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ my book ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ mine Possessive Pronoun ਹੈ।

Exam Tip: My, your, his, her, its, our, and their are Possessive Adjectives when they are used before nouns. Mine, yours, his, hers, ours, and theirs are Possessive Pronouns when they replace a noun phrase.
