In English Grammar, we use different types of Adjectives to describe people, places, animals, and things. Some adjectives describe colour, size, quality, or quantity, while others tell us about a country, place, or person.

A Proper Adjectives is an adjective that is formed from a Proper Noun. It tells us something about a person, place, country, or thing related to that Proper Noun.

Let us understand this with some simple examples.

  • India → Indian:
India is a Proper Noun, whereas Indian is a Proper Adjective.
    India (ਭਾਰਤ) ਇੱਕ Proper Noun ਹੈ, ਜਦਕਿ Indian (ਭਾਰਤੀ) ਇੱਕ Proper Adjective ਹੈ।
For example, Indian food is popular.
  • China → Chinese:
China is a Proper Noun, whereas Chinese is a Proper Adjective.
    China (ਚੀਨ) ਇੱਕ Proper Noun ਹੈ, ਜਦਕਿ Chinese (ਚੀਨੀ) ਇੱਕ Proper Adjective ਹੈ।
For example, Chinese food is popular.
  • France → French:
France is a Proper Noun, whereas French is a Proper Adjective.
    France (ਫਰਾਂਸ) ਇੱਕ Proper Noun ਹੈ, ਜਦਕਿ French (ਫਰਾਂਸੀਸੀ) ਇੱਕ Proper Adjective ਹੈ।
For example, French literature is famous.

How can we identify Proper Adjectives?

To identify a Proper Adjective, first look for a Proper Noun from which the adjective is formed. Then check whether the word describes something related to that name.

For example:

Difference Between Proper Nouns and Proper Adjectives

To understand Proper Adjectives correctly, it is important to know how they differ from Proper Nouns.
Proper Adjective ਨੂੰ ਸਹੀ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਸਮਝਣ ਲਈ Proper Noun ਅਤੇ Proper Adjective ਵਿਚਲਾ ਅੰਤਰ ਜਾਣਨਾ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ।

A Proper Noun is the special name of a person, place, country, or other particular entity. A Proper Adjective is formed from a Proper Noun and describes something related to it.

Remember that a Proper Noun names a particular person, place, or thing, whereas a Proper Adjective describes something associated with that name.

How Are Proper Adjectives Formed?

Proper Adjectives are often formed by changing the form of a Proper Noun. However, there is no single rule that works for every word. We usually learn these forms through usage.

Examples:

Proper NounProper Adjective
IndiaIndian
CanadaCanadian
BrazilBrazilian
AustraliaAustralian
ItalyItalian
RussiaRussian
AfricaAfrican
AsiaAsian

In these examples, endings such as -an, -ian, and -ese appear in some Proper Adjectives.

For example:

  • China → Chinese
  • Portugal → Portuguese
  • France → French
  • Greece → Greek
  • Switzerland → Swiss
  • England → English

These forms are different, so they should be learned individually.

Use of Proper Adjectives in Sentences

Proper Adjectives are commonly used before nouns. They help us understand which country, place, culture, language, or group is associated with the noun.

  • Example 1: Indian food

Indian food is popular in many countries.

  • Example 2: Chinese language

Chinese language learning requires regular practice.

Important Rule: Capital Letters

Proper Nouns and Proper Adjectives begin with a capital letter in English.
English ਵਿੱਚ Proper Nouns ਅਤੇ Proper Adjectives ਦਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਅੱਖਰ Capital Letter ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Examples:

  • India → Indian
  • China → Chinese
  • France → French
