An Exclamatory Adjective is a word used to express a strong feeling, such as surprise, wonder, or admiration. In English grammar, “what” is used as an Exclamatory Adjective when it comes before a noun or noun phrase to express such a feeling.

  2. What an intelligent boy!
  3. What a big building!
  4. What a foolish act!

In these sentences, what is used before the nouns flower, boy, building, and act to express strong feelings.

Rules for Exclamatory Adjectives

Rule 1: What is used before a noun to express a strong feeling

When what comes before a noun or noun phrase and expresses surprise, wonder, or admiration, it is used as an Exclamatory Adjective.

Examples:

  • What a lovely dress!
  • What a brave soldier!
  • What a great idea!

For example, in What a lovely dress!, the word What comes before the noun phrase a lovely dress and expresses admiration for the dress.
ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ, What a lovely dress!

Rule 2: Use a before a singular countable noun beginning with a consonant sound

When the noun phrase contains a singular countable noun that begins with a consonant sound, we generally use what a.

Examples:

  • What a beautiful house!
  • What a clever student!
  • What a big mistake!

For example, in What a beautiful house!, the word beautiful begins with a consonant sound. The noun house is a singular countable noun. Therefore, we use a after What.
ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ, What a beautiful house!

Rule 3: Use an before a singular countable noun beginning with a vowel sound

When the noun phrase contains a singular countable noun and the following word begins with a vowel sound, we generally use what an.

  • Structure: What + an + adjective + singular countable noun!

Examples:

  • What an intelligent boy!
  • What an amazing story!
  • What an ugly woman!

For example, in What an intelligent boy!, the word intelligent begins with a vowel sound. Therefore, we use an after What.
What an intelligent boy! ਵਿੱਚ intelligent ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਸਵਰ ਧੁਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ What ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ an ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ।

Important Note: The choice between A and An depends on the first sound of the following word, not simply its first letter.
ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖੋ ਕਿ A ਅਤੇ An ਦੀ ਚੋਣ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਅੱਖਰ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਧੁਨੀ (Sound) ਦੇ ਆਧਾਰ ‘ਤੇ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

Rule 4: What can also be used in a complete exclamatory sentence

Sometimes, an exclamatory expression beginning with What is followed by a complete sentence. In such sentences, What expresses a strong feeling about a person, place, thing or situation.

Examples:

  • What a beautiful flower it is!
  • What a wonderful day it is!
  • What an intelligent girl she is!

For example, What a beautiful flower it is! expresses admiration for the beauty of the flower. The sentence means that the flower is very beautiful.
ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ, What a beautiful flower it is!
