Interrogative Adjectives are words used before nouns to ask questions. The main interrogative adjectives are which, what, and whose.
In simple words, when we use which, what, or whose before a noun to ask a question, these words are called Interrogative Adjectives.

Examples of Interrogative Adjectives:

  1. Which pen is yours?
    ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਪੈੱਨ ਹੈ?

    ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹੋ?

In these sentences, which, whose, and what are used before the nouns pen, notebook, and book, respectively. Therefore, they are Interrogative Adjectives.

Rules of Interrogative Adjectives

Rule 1: Interrogative Adjectives are used before nouns

When which, what, or whose comes before a noun to ask a question, it functions as an Interrogative Adjective.
ਜਦੋਂ which, what, ਜਾਂ whose ਕਿਸੇ Noun (ਨਾਂਵ) ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਆ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਪੁੱਛਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ Interrogative Adjective ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Examples:

  • Which book is yours?
  • What game do you play?
  • Whose mobile is this?

Here, book, game, and mobile are nouns.
ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਾਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ book, game, ਅਤੇ mobile nouns ਹਨ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ which, what, ਅਤੇ whose ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇਹ Interrogative Adjectives ਹਨ।

Rule 2: They are used to ask questions

Interrogative Adjectives help us ask questions about people, things, choices, or ownership.
Interrogative Adjectives ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਆਂ, ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ, ਚੋਣਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਮਾਲਕੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਪੁੱਛਣ ਲਈ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

Examples:

  • Which train should we take?
    ਸਾਨੂੰ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਰੇਲਗੱਡੀ ਲੈਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ?
  • What language do you speak?
    ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਹੋ?
  • Whose house is this?
    ਇਹ ਕਿਸ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਹੈ?

Rule 3: Which, What and Whose can also be Interrogative Pronouns

The words which, what, and whose are called Interrogative Pronouns when they are used without a noun following them and perform the function of a pronoun.

Examples:

  • Which book is yours? — Interrogative Adjective
  • Which is yours? — Interrogative Pronoun
  • What subject do you like? — Interrogative Adjective
  • What do you like? — Interrogative Pronoun
  • Whose bag is this? — Interrogative Adjective
  • Whose is this? — Interrogative Pronoun

Remember: When these words are used before nouns, they function as Interrogative Adjectives. When they are used independently as pronouns, they function as Interrogative Pronouns.
