Possessive Pronouns are used to show possession, ownership, or relationship. They indicate that something belongs to someone or is associated with someone.
Possessive Pronouns

In English, there are three forms that are important for understanding possession: Nominative Case, Possessive Adjective, and Possessive Pronoun.
English ਵਿੱਚ possession ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਲਈ ਤਿੰਨ ਰੂਪ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਹਨ: Nominative Case, Possessive Adjective ਅਤੇ Possessive Pronoun

1. Nominative Case — ਕਰਤਾ ਕਾਰਕ

The Nominative Case contains the basic forms of Personal Pronouns, such as I, we, you, he, she, and it. These forms are generally used as the subject of a sentence.
Nominative Case ਵਿੱਚ Personal Pronouns ਦੇ ਮੂਲ ਰੂਪ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਵੇਂ I, we, you, he, she ਅਤੇ it। ਇਹ ਰੂਪ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ Subject (ਕਰਤਾ) ਵਜੋਂ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

Examples:

  • I have a book.
    ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਇੱਕ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਹੈ।
  • She has a bag.
    ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਇੱਕ ਬੈਗ ਹੈ।

Here, I and She are Nominative Case forms.
ਇੱਥੇ I ਅਤੇ She, Nominative Case ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਹਨ।

2. Possessive Adjective — Possessive Adjective ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ

A Possessive Adjective shows possession and is always used before a noun.
Possessive Adjective ਮਲਕੀਅਤ ਜਾਂ ਹੱਕ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ Noun ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

For example:

  • My book — ਮੇਰੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ
  • Our school — ਸਾਡਾ ਸਕੂਲ
  • Your pen — ਤੁਹਾਡਾ/ਤੇਰਾ ਪੈਨ
  • His car — ਉਸਦੀ ਕਾਰ
  • Her bag — ਉਸਦਾ ਬੈਗ
  • Its tail — ਇਸਦੀ ਪੂੰਛ

The important point is that a noun must follow a Possessive Adjective.
ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਗੱਲ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ Possessive Adjective ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ Noun ਆਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ

Examples:

  • This is my book.
    ਇਹ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਹੈ।
  • That is her bag.
    ਉਹ ਉਸਦਾ ਬੈਗ ਹੈ।

Here, my and her are Possessive Adjectives because they are used before the nouns book and bag.
ਇੱਥੇ my ਅਤੇ her, Possessive Adjectives ਹਨ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ book ਅਤੇ bag Nouns ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਵਰਤੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ।

3. Possessive Pronoun — Possessive Pronoun ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ

A Possessive Pronoun also shows possession, but it is used independently without a noun immediately after it. It usually replaces the combination of Possessive Adjective + Noun.

Compare:

  • This is my book.
    ਇਹ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਹੈ।
  • This book is mine.
    ਇਹ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਮੇਰੀ ਹੈ

In the first sentence, my is followed by the noun book, so my is a Possessive Adjective. In the second sentence, mine is used independently, so it is a Possessive Pronoun.
ਪਹਿਲੇ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ my ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ book Noun ਆਇਆ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ my Possessive Adjective ਹੈ। ਦੂਜੇ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ mine ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇਹ Possessive Pronoun ਹੈ।

Possessive Adjective vs Possessive Pronoun

The easiest way to identify the difference is to check whether a noun comes after the possessive form.
ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਤਰ ਪਛਾਣਨ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸੌਖਾ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਇਹ ਦੇਖਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ Possessive form ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ Noun ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ।

Possessive AdjectivePossessive Pronoun
my book — ਮੇਰੀ ਕਿਤਾਬThe book is mine. — ਕਿਤਾਬ ਮੇਰੀ ਹੈ।
our house — ਸਾਡਾ ਘਰThe house is ours. — ਘਰ ਸਾਡਾ ਹੈ।
your pen — ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਪੈਨThe pen is yours. — ਪੈਨ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਹੈ।
his car — ਉਸਦੀ ਕਾਰThe car is his. — ਕਾਰ ਉਸਦੀ ਹੈ।
her bag — ਉਸਦਾ ਬੈਗThe bag is hers. — ਬੈਗ ਉਸਦਾ ਹੈ।

Forms of Possession — Possession ਦੇ ਰੂਪ

The relationship between the three forms can be remembered as follows:
ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤਿੰਨ ਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ:

  • I → my → mine
  • We → our → ours
  • You → your → yours
  • He → his → his
  • She → her → hers
  • It → its → ×

Important Rule

  • Possessive Adjective + Noun
my book, our house, your pen, his car, her bag
  • Possessive Pronoun + No Noun immediately after it
    Possessive Pronoun + ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਬਾਅਦ Noun ਨਹੀਂ
    mine, ours, yours, his, hers

Therefore:

  • This is my book. — ਇਹ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਹੈ।
  • This book is mine. — ਇਹ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਮੇਰੀ ਹੈ।
  • This is our house. — ਇਹ ਸਾਡਾ ਘਰ ਹੈ।
  • This house is ours. — ਇਹ ਘਰ ਸਾਡਾ ਹੈ।
  • This is your pen. — ਇਹ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਪੈਨ ਹੈ।
  • This pen is yours. — ਇਹ ਪੈਨ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਹੈ।

Special Point: His — His ਦੀ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਵਰਤੋਂ

His is used in both forms: as a Possessive Adjective and as a Possessive Pronoun. Its form does not change.
His ਦੋਹਾਂ ਰੂਪਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ: Possessive Adjective ਅਤੇ Possessive Pronoun ਵਜੋਂ। ਇਸਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਦਲਦਾ।

  • This is his book.
ਇਹ ਉਸਦੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਹੈ।Here, his is a Possessive Adjective because it comes before book.
    ਇੱਥੇ his, Possessive Adjective ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ book ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ।
  • This book is his.
ਇਹ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਉਸਦੀ ਹੈ।Here, his is a Possessive Pronoun because it is used independently.
    ਇੱਥੇ his, Possessive Pronoun ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

Special Point: Its — Its ਦੀ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਵਰਤੋਂ

Its is used as a Possessive Adjective/Determiner before a noun. Standard English does not normally use a separate independent possessive-pronoun form for it.
Its ਨੂੰ Noun ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ Possessive Adjective/Determiner ਵਜੋਂ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। Standard English ਵਿੱਚ it ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਵੱਖਰਾ independent Possessive Pronoun ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ।

Example:

  • The dog is wagging its tail.
    ਕੁੱਤਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਪੂੰਛ ਹਿਲਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

Here, its is followed by the noun tail, so its is a Possessive Adjective/Determiner.
ਇੱਥੇ its ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ tail Noun ਆਇਆ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ its, Possessive Adjective/Determiner ਹੈ।

Therefore, × is given in the Possessive Pronoun column for It.
ਇਸ ਲਈ It ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ Possessive Pronoun ਵਾਲੇ ਕਾਲਮ ਵਿੱਚ × ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
