Perfect for exam preparation and quick revision.

Rule (21): Pronouns with with
with ਨਾਲ Pronouns ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ

When two nouns are joined by with, the pronoun and adjective must agree with the first noun (before with), not the second.
ਜਦੋਂ ਦੋ nouns with ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੇ ਹੋਣ, ਤਾਂ pronoun ਅਤੇ adjective ਪਹਿਲੇ noun ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਨਾ ਕਿ ਦੂਜੇ noun ਦੇ।

  • The girl with her parents has gone to see a movie. (Correct)
Here, girl is the first noun (singular, female), so the pronoun is her.
    ਇੱਥੇ girl ਪਹਿਲਾ noun ਹੈ (ਇਕਵਚਨ, ਇਸਤਰੀ), ਇਸ ਲਈ pronoun her ਵਰਤਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
The girl with their/his parents has gone to see a movie. (Incorrect)
  • The children with their parents have gone to picnic. (Correct)
Here, children is the first noun (plural), so the pronoun is their.
    ਇੱਥੇ children ਪਹਿਲਾ noun ਹੈ (ਬਹੁਵਚਨ), ਇਸ ਲਈ pronoun their ਵਰਤਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
The children with his/her/its parents have gone to picnic. (Incorrect)

With with, always match the pronoun/adjective to the first noun.
with ਨਾਲ pronoun ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਪਹਿਲੇ noun ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਵਰਤੋ।

Rule (22): Two Singular Nouns with and → One Person/Thing → Singular Pronoun
ਦੋ Singular Nouns and ਨਾਲ → ਇੱਕ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ/ਚੀਜ਼ → Singular Pronoun

When two or more singular nouns are joined by and, but they refer to one person or one thing, the subject is treated as singular.
In this case, we use singular pronouns/adjectives (he, his, it, its).
ਇਸ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿੱਚ singular pronouns/adjectives (he, his, it, its) ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

  • Mr. Sudhir Kumar, my senior and proprietor of Lucent Publication, is known for his honesty and good behaviour. (Correct)
Here, my senior and proprietor both describe the same person → pronoun/adjective is his.

ਜਦੋਂ many a/an + singular noun ਨੂੰ subject ਵਜੋਂ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਇਸਨੂੰ singular ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਸ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿੱਚ singular pronouns/adjectives (he, his, she, her, it, its) ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ — ਨਾ ਕਿ plural (they, their).
