Reciprocal Pronouns are special words like Each other and One another that show a mutual relationship — when two or more people or things act towards one another. These pronouns are very important in grammar and often asked in competitive exams. In this article, we will explain their rules, examples, and correct usage in a clear way with English–Punjabi explanation so that you can easily understand and remember.

Use of Each Other and One Another
Each Other ਅਤੇ One Another ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ

Reciprocal pronouns are used to show a mutual relationship between people or things. The pronoun each other is generally used when referring to two persons or things, while one another is used when referring to more than two persons or things.

For example:

  • The two girls love each other. (Correct)
    ਦੋ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਇਕ‑ਦੂਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ
  • We all love one another. (Correct)
    ਅਸੀਂ ਸਭ ਇਕ‑ਦੂਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ

ਊhere is no strict difference between each other and one another. However, for exam purposes, it is better to use each other for two and one another for more than two.
ਹੁਣ each other ਅਤੇ one another ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਡਾ ਫਰਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਗਿਆ। ਪਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆ ਲਈ, each other ਦੋ ਲਈ ਅਤੇ one another ਵੱਧ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਲਈ ਵਰਤਣਾ ਵਧੀਆ ਹੈ।

Note on Reciprocal Pronouns

(i) Reciprocal Pronouns Cannot Be Used as Subjects

Reciprocal pronouns (each other and one another) should not be used as subjects in a sentence. They only work as objects.
Reciprocal pronouns (each other ਅਤੇ one another) ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ subject ਵਜੋਂ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ। ਇਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ object ਵਜੋਂ ਹੀ ਠੀਕ ਹਨ।

For example:

  • They are ready to go there. (Correct)
  • Each other are ready to go there. (Incorrect)
  • They were ready to come here. (Correct)
  • One another were ready to come here. (Incorrect)

In these sentences, the subject must be a proper pronoun like they. Using each other or one another as the subject is grammatically incorrect.
ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਾਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ subject ਲਈ they ਵਰਗਾ pronoun ਵਰਤਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। Each other ਜਾਂ one another ਨੂੰ subject ਵਜੋਂ ਵਰਤਣਾ ਗਲਤ ਹੈ।

On the other hand, reciprocal pronouns are correctly used as objects of verbs or prepositions:
ਪਰ ਇਹ pronouns verb ਜਾਂ preposition ਦੇ object ਵਜੋਂ ਸਹੀ ਹਨ:

  • You and he help each other. (object of verb help)
  • All the members of the family quarrelled with one another. (object of preposition with)

Thus, the correct rule is: each other and one another are objects only, not subjects.
ਇਸ ਲਈ ਨਿਯਮ ਹੈ: each other ਅਤੇ one another ਸਿਰਫ਼ *object ਵਜੋਂ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, subject ਵਜੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ।

(ii) Reciprocal Pronouns as Objects

Reciprocal pronouns (each other and one another) are correctly used as objects of verbs or prepositions, not as subjects.
Reciprocal pronouns (each other ਅਤੇ one another) ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਫ਼ verb ਜਾਂ preposition ਦੇ object ਵਜੋਂ ਹੀ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, subject ਵਜੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ।

Examples:

  • You and he help each other. → Here, each other is the object of the verb help.(ਇੱਥੇ each other verb help ਦਾ object ਹੈ।)
  • All the members of the family quarrelled with one another. → Here, one another is the object of the preposition with. (ਇੱਥੇ one another preposition with ਦਾ object ਹੈ।)

This shows that reciprocal pronouns function properly only when they follow a verb or a preposition.
ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ pronouns ਸਿਰਫ਼ verb ਜਾਂ preposition ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਹੀ ਠੀਕ ਹਨ।
