- The Government of Nepal cancelled the 17th Seminar of the International Association for Tibetan Studies (IATS), an internationally renowned academic conference that was scheduled to take place in Kathmandu from August 23 to 29, 2026.
- The Supreme Court of India has extended mandatory third-party insurance for new private vehicles by one year—to 4 years for cars and 6 years for two-wheelers—addressing the fact that nearly 56% of vehicles on Indian roads remain uninsured. A Bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and Prashant Kumar Mishra directed IRDAI to implement the mandate immediately and proposed tech-driven enforcement measures, including ANPR database integration and a “No Insurance, No Fuel” pilot program.
- Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu officially declared August 15 as “India Day” to celebrate India’s 79th Independence Day and honor the contributions of the 5+ million-strong Indian-American community. The proclamations highlighted deepening India–US ties, recognizing the establishment of the new Indian Consulate in Boston and the historic visit of INS Sudarshini during the SAILBOSTON-250 event.
- Parliament has passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, increasing the sanctioned judge strength from 33 to 37 (excluding the CJI), bringing total capacity to 38 judges to reduce case pendency and accelerate disposal. Replacing an ordinance issued in May 2026, the law amends the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956, to enable more benches and streamline high-volume litigation. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal highlighted the reform as a crucial step toward strengthening judicial infrastructure and ensuring timely justice across the country.
- The Department of Pharmaceuticals, in collaboration with FICCI, is hosting the 9th edition of India Medical Device 2026 on August 7–8 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Centering on the theme “Towards Viksit Bharat: Advancing India as a Global Hub for Quality Medical Devices,” the conference highlights India’s ambition to scale its MedTech market from over $15 billion to $50 billion by 2030. Inaugurated by Minister of State Anupriya Patel, with a keynote address by Union Minister J.P. Nadda, the two-day summit brings together policymakers, industry CEOs, start-ups, and researchers to address component localization, AI in healthcare (Software as a Medical Device), clinical evidence pathways, and export expansion.
- The Gujarat Government, under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, imposed a statewide ban on the production, storage, transportation, distribution, and sale of unstandardised analogue paneer, cheese, and butter. The decision follows extensive inspections by the Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA), which revealed that non-dairy substitutes made with vegetable oils (such as palm oil), starches, and emulsifiers were widely being sold as genuine milk products. Health Minister Praful Pansheriya emphasized that strict legal action will be taken against violators. The ban aims to eliminate health risks from substandard food items, prevent consumer deception, and protect Gujarat’s dairy industry and cooperative milk producers.
- The Telangana Police, led by DGP C.V. Anand, launched the NextGen AI-enabled Dial-112 Emergency Response Support System (TG-ERSS) at the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre (TGiCCC) in Hyderabad.
- The Andhra Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, unveiled a master roadmap for the Visakhapatnam Economic Region (VER). The growth plan envisions transforming North Coastal Andhra into a regional growth engine targeting ₹9.3 lakh crore to ₹9.5 lakh crore in total investment.
