What Exactly is an Adjective?
In English grammar, an adjective is not just a “describing word”—it is the identity card of a Noun or Pronoun. It modifies, qualifies, and limits the meaning of a noun. Think of a Noun as a plain, uncolored sketch. The Adjective is the color, the shading, and the fine details that bring that sketch to life. Without adjectives, our language would be dull, vague, and impossible to understand clearly. They tell us what kind, how many, or which one about the noun they are attached to.
Let’s look at these 5 simple sentences to understand the logic:
- She is a beautiful woman.
(Here, ‘beautiful’ describes the woman.) - Ali is handsome and intelligent.
(Here, ‘handsome’ and ‘intelligent’ describe Ali.) - He has a big house.
(Here, ‘big’ describes the house.) - It is a charming scenery.
(Here, ‘charming’ describes the scenery.) - He is rich.
(Here, ‘rich’ describes ‘He’.)
In all the sentences above, the words beautiful, handsome, intelligent, big, charming, and rich are qualifying (describing) the Nouns (woman, Ali, house, scenery) and the Pronoun (He). Therefore, these describing words are Adjectives.
The Two Main Uses of Adjectives:
Attributive vs. Predicative
An adjective can be placed in two main positions in a sentence. When it comes directly before the noun it describes, it is called Attributive use. When it comes after a linking verb (like is, was, seems) to describe the subject, it is called Predicative use.
ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ, ਜਦੋਂ Adjective Noun ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ linking verb (ਜਿਵੇਂ is, was) ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਆ ਕੇ subject ਦੀ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਤਾ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ: She was industrious), ਤਾਂ ਇਸਨੂੰ Predicative use ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Now understand this concept with examples and detailed explanation.
E.g. (Attributive):
He has a red pen. / He was an intelligent man.
E.g. (Predicative):
She was industrious. / Maneshwar Babu is intelligent.
