• India has become the world’s largest rice producer after surpassing China with record output, as announced by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. According to the advance estimates released by the Ministry of Agriculture, rice production for the 2025–26 crop year is a record 154.02 million tonnes (MT), which is 3.84 million tonnes higher than the previous year’s production of 150.18 million tonnes.
• Veteran singer Suman Kalyanpur has died at the age of 89.
• The Supreme Court has appointed five new judges, increasing its strength to 37, which is one short of the upgraded total strength of 38 (recently raised from 34). Punjab & Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and senior advocate V. Mohana have also been elevated as judges of the Supreme Court.
