- India has become the world’s largest rice producer after surpassing China with record output, as announced by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. According to the advance estimates released by the Ministry of Agriculture, rice production for the 2025–26 crop year is a record 154.02 million tonnes (MT), which is 3.84 million tonnes higher than the previous year’s production of 150.18 million tonnes.
- Veteran singer Suman Kalyanpur has died at the age of 89.
- The Supreme Court has appointed five new judges, increasing its strength to 37, which is one short of the upgraded total strength of 38 (recently raised from 34). Punjab & Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and senior advocate V. Mohana have also been elevated as judges of the Supreme Court.
- The New Egerton Woollen Mills, also known as Dhariwal Woollen Mills, a 152‑year‑old unit, is set to close down following the recommendation of NITI Aayog. Established in 1874, the mill was renowned for its “My Fair Lady” brand of knitting wool and woollen products.
- Malaysia has enforced rules banning children under 16 years of age from using social media accounts in an effort to tighten online safety. The regulations make it compulsory for social media platforms to implement age‑verification systems and block users under 16. Firms that fail to comply with these norms will face penalties of up to 2.5 million dollars.
