When we speak or write in English, we often use words to describe a person, a place, a thing, or the amount of something. These words help us make our sentences more meaningful and clear. In English Grammar, some of these words are called Adjectives.

Now, let us understand two important types of Adjectives: Adjectives of Quality and Adjectives of Quantity. These are important topics for students preparing for competitive examinations such as PSSSB, Punjab Police, and other Punjab Government recruitment exams.
ਆਓ, ਹੁਣ Adjectives ਦੀਆਂ ਦੋ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝੀਏ: Adjectives of Quality (ਗੁਣਵਾਚਕ) ਅਤੇ Adjectives of Quantity (ਮਾਤਰਾਵਾਚਕ)।

Adjectives of Quality (ਗੁਣਵਾਚਕ)

An Adjective of Quality is a word that tells us what kind of person, place, animal, or thing someone or something is. It describes the quality, nature, condition, or characteristic of a Noun or Pronoun.

Let us understand this with some simple examples.

  • Raman is a tall man.
    ਰਮਨ ਇੱਕ ਲੰਬਾ ਆਦਮੀ ਹੈ।

In this sentence, tall describes the height of Raman. It tells us what kind of man Raman is. Therefore, tall is an Adjective of Quality.
ਇਸ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ tall (ਲੰਬਾ) ਸ਼ਬਦ Raman ਦੀ ਲੰਬਾਈ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ tall ਇੱਕ Adjective of Quality ਹੈ।

  • She is a beautiful girl.
    ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਕੁੜੀ ਹੈ।

Here, beautiful describes the appearance of the girl. It tells us what kind of girl she is. Therefore, beautiful is an Adjective of Quality.
ਇੱਥੇ beautiful (ਸੋਹਣੀ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕੁੜੀ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਖ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ beautiful ਇੱਕ Adjective of Quality ਹੈ।

  • He is a foolish student.
    ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਮੂਰਖ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਹੈ।

Here, foolish describes the student’s characteristic. Therefore, foolish is an Adjective of Quality.
ਇਸ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ foolish (ਮੂਰਖ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਦੇ ਸੁਭਾਅ ਜਾਂ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਤਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ foolish ਇੱਕ Adjective of Quality ਹੈ।

  • I write with an old pen.
    ਮੈਂ ਇੱਕ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਪੈੱਨ ਨਾਲ ਲਿਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

Here, old tells us about the age of the pen. Therefore, old is an Adjective of Quality.
ਇੱਥੇ old (ਪੁਰਾਣਾ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਪੈੱਨ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਜਾਂ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਹੋਣ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ old ਇੱਕ Adjective of Quality ਹੈ।

How to identify an Adjective of Quality?

Whenever you see a Noun or Pronoun in a sentence, try to understand whether a word describes its quality, nature, condition, or characteristic. You can often identify an Adjective of Quality by asking “What kind?”

For example:

  • What kind of man? — A tall man.
  • What kind of girl? — A beautiful girl.
  • What kind of student? — A foolish student.
  • What kind of pen? — An old pen.

ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਉਦਾਹਰਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ bold ਕੀਤੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ Noun ਬਾਰੇ ਹੋਰ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇਹ Adjectives of Quality ਹਨ।

Remember: Adjectives of Quality describe quality or characteristics; they do not tell us how much of something is present. We will understand the difference more clearly when we study Adjectives of Quantity.

Adjectives of Quantity (ਮਾਤਰਾਵਾਚਕ)

An Adjective of Quantity is a word that tells us how much of something is present. It indicates the amount or quantity of a thing, rather than describing its quality.
Adjective of Quantity

For example, if I say, “I have water,” you know that I have water, but you do not know how much water I have. Now, if I say, “I have some water,” the word some tells you something about the quantity of water.

Let us understand this with some more examples.

  • Mukesh has enough money.
    ਮੁਕੇਸ਼ ਕੋਲ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਪੈਸੇ ਹਨ।

In this sentence, enough tells us that Mukesh has a sufficient amount of money. It indicates the quantity of money. Therefore, enough is an Adjective of Quantity in traditional grammar.

  • He has lost all his wealth.
    ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਦੌਲਤ ਗੁਆ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ।

Here, all tells us that the entire wealth was lost, not just a part of it. Therefore, all indicates the quantity or extent of the wealth.

  • She has a lot of coffee.
    ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀ ਕੌਫੀ ਹੈ।

In this sentence, a lot of tells us that she has a large amount of coffee. Therefore, it indicates quantity.

  • There is a little water in the glass.
    ਗਲਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਥੋੜ੍ਹਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਹੈ।

Here, a little tells us that the amount of water in the glass is small. Therefore, it indicates quantity.
ਇੱਥੇ a little (ਥੋੜ੍ਹਾ ਜਿਹਾ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਘੱਟ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਦਾ ਬੋਧ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Common expressions used to indicate quantity

In English, we use several words and expressions to talk about the quantity of something. Some common examples are:

  • Some — ਕੁਝ
  • Any — ਕੁਝ / ਕੋਈ ਵੀ, ਸੰਦਰਭ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ
  • Enough — ਕਾਫ਼ੀ
  • Much — ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ
  • Little — ਬਹੁਤ ਘੱਟ
  • A little — ਥੋੜ੍ਹਾ ਜਿਹਾ
  • All — ਸਾਰਾ / ਸਾਰੀ
  • A lot of — ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰਾ / ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀ
  • A great deal of — ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡੀ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਵਿੱਚ
  • A large amount of — ਵੱਡੀ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਵਿੱਚ
  • Plenty of — ਭਰਪੂਰ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਵਿੱਚ

For example, we can say some water, enough money, much time, and a little milk. These expressions help us explain how much of something is present.
ਅਸੀਂ some water, enough money, much time ਅਤੇ a little milk ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਕੰਸ਼ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦੀ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।

How to identify an Adjective of Quantity?

To identify an Adjective of Quantity, look for a word that tells you how much of something is present.
Adjective of Quantity

For example:

  • How much money? — Enough money.
  • How much water? — A little water.
  • How much coffee? — A lot of coffee.
  • How much wealth? — All his wealth.

ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਦਾਹਰਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ bold ਕੀਤੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਪੈਸਿਆਂ, ਪਾਣੀ, ਕੌਫੀ ਅਤੇ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੀ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਜਾਂ ਪੂਰਨਤਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।

Remember: Adjectives of Quantity tell us how much of something is present, whereas Adjectives of Quality tell us what kind of person or thing someone or something is.
Adjectives of Quantity ਮਾਤਰਾ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਦਕਿ Adjectives of Quality ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਜਾਂ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਜਾਂ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਤਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।

So, students, now you can easily understand the difference between Adjectives of Quality and Adjectives of Quantity. An Adjective of Quality tells us what kind of person or thing someone or something is, whereas an Adjective of Quantity tells us how much of something is present.

For example, in the sentence “She is a beautiful girl,” the word beautiful describes the girl’s appearance, so it is an Adjective of Quality. On the other hand, in the sentence “She has some money,” the word some indicates the quantity of money, so it is traditionally classified as an Adjective of Quantity.
ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ, “She is a beautiful girl” ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ beautiful ਕੁੜੀ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਖ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇਹ Adjective of Quality ਹੈ। ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ, “She has some money” ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ some ਪੈਸਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਰਵਾਇਤੀ ਵਿਆਕਰਨ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ Adjective of Quantity ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Remember this simple rule for your competitive exams:

  • Adjective of Quality: What kind? (ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਜਾਂ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ?)
  • Adjective of Quantity: How much? (ਕਿੰਨਾ ਜਾਂ ਕਿੰਨੀ ਮਾਤਰਾ?)

Keep practising with different sentences, and you will gradually become more confident in identifying these adjectives in English grammar questions.
