- The Supreme Court of India has allowed euthanasia for stray dogs that pose a threat to human life. The Court stated that the right to live with dignity and the right to move freely without threat from any dog or canine stand on the highest pedestal of constitutional protection.
Euthanasia refers to the intentional ending of the life of a patient who has been suffering from deep pain for a long time and has no remedial solution available. - Former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri has died at the age of 91. He was also an Army Major General and served as the Minister of Transport and Highways in the government of late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
- The Maharashtra Government has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) worth ₹6.5 lakh crore with four companies for nuclear energy projects, with an estimated generation capacity of 25,400 MW of power. These projects are also expected to create around 1,23,500 jobs.
- The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, will tour India from May 23 to May 26 to strengthen cooperation in the fields of trade, defence, and energy. He will also visit Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi. In addition, he will take part in the meeting of the Quad group in India along with other member countries — Australia, Japan, and the United States.
- Google and investment firm Blackstone have joined hands to create a new venture that will provide efficient data centre capacity, operations, and network services, along with Google Cloud’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) as part of a “compute‑as‑a‑service” offering.
- The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has launched the Nidhi Aapke Nikat programme to reduce pending cases across various legal forums, which have declined to 2,646 as of 31 March 2026. EPFO has also decided to address employee grievances through WhatsApp, adding that members can initiate a conversation with the organisation by typing “Hello” to EPFO’s registered WhatsApp number.
- Pakistan lost the Test series 2–0 to Bangladesh, with the visitors completing a clean sweep.
- KL Rahul will be the next vice‑captain of the Indian Test team for the upcoming Test match against Afghanistan in Mullanpur. He will replace Rishabh Pant. The current captain of the Indian Test team is Shubman Gill.
- Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit India to attend the BRICS Summit on September 12 and 13 in New Delhi. This year, India is the host of the BRICS annual summit. The last time President Putin visited India was during the India–Russia Annual Summit, which was held in December 2025.
- Soumya Swaminathan has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society, the world’s oldest scientific academy in continuous existence. She is the daughter of M. S. Swaminathan, known as the Father of the Green Revolution in India, who was also elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Soumya Swaminathan has become the second woman from India to be elected as a Fellow, after Gagandeep Kang in 2019.
