Joining Two Sentences with Relative Pronouns
In English, we often write two small sentences together. For example, we can say “This is the house. Vijay built it.” These two sentences are correct, but they sound short and separate. Good English joins them and makes one strong sentence. We can say, “This is the house that Vijay built.” This one sentence looks better and sounds smooth.
ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸੀਂ ਅਕਸਰ ਦੋ ਛੋਟੇ ਵਾਕ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਜਿਵੇਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ “This is the house. Vijay built it.” ਅਸੀਂ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ, “This is the house that Vijay built.” ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਕ ਵਧੀਆ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ਸੁਣਾਈ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
To join two sentences like this, we use some special words. These words are who, whom, whose, which and that. These words are called Relative Pronouns. A relative pronoun works like a bridge. It connects two sentences and makes them one. The word “who” is used for persons, “which” is used for things and animals, and “that” can be used for both.
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੋ ਵਾਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੋੜਨ ਲਈ ਅਸੀਂ ਕੁਝ ਖਾਸ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹਨ who, whom, whose, which ਅਤੇ that।
In this article, we will learn how to join two sentences with these words. We will understand each rule with easy examples. We will also learn where to put commas in the sentence. After reading this article, you will be able to join any two sentences easily. Let us start learning.
Rule 1: Joining Two Sentences with ‘Who’
‘Who’ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ
Use of ‘Who’
The relative pronoun who is used to join two sentences. We use who only for persons — never for things or animals. When the second sentence talks about a person with the words he, she or they, we can join both sentences with who.
There are two types of joining with “who”.
“who” ਨਾਲ ਵਾਕ ਜੋੜਨ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਹਨ।
Type I: In this type, the sentence from “who” comes just after the noun. It tells us which person we are talking about.
- There is the man. He repaired our T.V. set.
ਉਹ ਆਦਮੀ ਹੈ। ਉਸਨੇ ਸਾਡੀ ਟੀ.ਵੀ. ਠੀਕ ਕੀਤੀ।
There is the man who repaired our T.V. set.
ਉਹ ਆਦਮੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਨੇ ਸਾਡੀ ਟੀ.ਵੀ. ਠੀਕ ਕੀਤੀ। - These are the soldiers. They won the Paramvir Chakra.
ਇਹ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਹਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਵੀਰ ਚੱਕਰ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ।
These are the soldiers who won the Paramvir Chakra.
ਇਹ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਹਨ ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਵੀਰ ਚੱਕਰ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ।
In these examples, the word “He” becomes “who” and “They” becomes “who”. Then this part is placed just after “the man” and “the soldiers”. One sentence is ready.
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਉਦਾਹਰਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ, “He” ਸ਼ਬਦ “who” ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ “They” ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵੀ “who” ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਫਿਰ ਇਹ ਹਿੱਸਾ “the man” ਅਤੇ “the soldiers” ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਲਗਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਕ ਤਿਆਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Type II: In this type, the “who” part gives extra information about the noun. So we put it between two commas.
ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ, “who” ਵਾਲਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ noun ਬਾਰੇ ਵਾਧੂ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਕਾਮਿਆਂ (commas) ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
- The boy fell off his bicycle. He has hurt his leg.
ਮੁੰਡਾ ਸਾਈਕਲ ਤੋਂ ਡਿੱਗ ਗਿਆ। ਉਸਦੀ ਲੱਤ ਲੱਗ ਗਈ ਹੈ।
The boy who fell off his bicycle has hurt his leg.
ਉਹ ਮੁੰਡਾ ਜੋ ਸਾਈਕਲ ਤੋਂ ਡਿੱਗਿਆ, ਉਸਦੀ ਲੱਤ ਲੱਗ ਗਈ ਹੈ। - The boys clapped heartily. They were watching the game.
ਮੁੰਡਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਤਾੜੀਆਂ ਵਜਾਈਆਂ। ਉਹ game ਵੇਖ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ। - The boys, who were watching the game, clapped heartily.
ਮੁੰਡੇ, ਜੋ game ਵੇਖ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ, ਤਾੜੀਆਂ ਵਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।
In the last example, we use commas because “who were watching the game” is extra information. It is not needed to know which boys we are talking about. All the boys were watching the game. But in the first example, no commas are needed because “who fell off his bicycle” tells us exactly which boy hurt his leg. It is necessary information.
ਆਖਰੀ ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਾਮੇ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿਉਂਕੇ “who were watching the game” ਵਾਧੂ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਹੈ।
Easy trick to remember: If the second sentence has he, she or they, use who to join the sentences.
ਜੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ he, she ਜਾਂ they ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਵਾਕ ਜੋੜਨ ਲਈ who ਵਰਤੋ।
Rule 2: Joining Two Sentences with ‘Whom’
‘Whom’ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ
Use of ‘Whom’
The relative pronoun whom is also used to join two sentences. We use whom only for persons — never for things or animals. When the second sentence talks about a person with the words him, her or them, we join both sentences with whom.
Remember one thing: who is used when the person does the action. Whom is used when the person receives the action. For example, “We like them.” Here, “them” receives the action of liking. So we use whom.
ਜਿਵੇਂ, “We like them.” ਇੱਥੇ “them” ‘ਤੇ ਪਸੰਦ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਅਸੀਂ whom ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
Example:
- Our new neighbours invited us to tea. We like them very much.
ਸਾਡੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਗੁਆਂਢੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਚਾਹ ਲਈ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ। ਅਸੀਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਸੰਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। - Our new neighbours, whom we like very much, invited us to tea.
ਸਾਡੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਗੁਆਂਢੀ, ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਸੀਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਸੰਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਚਾਹ ਲਈ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ।
Let us see how this joining is done. In the second sentence, the word “them” is used for the neighbours. We change “them” into “whom”. Then the part “whom we like very much” is placed just after the word “neighbours”. Since this part gives extra information, we put it between two commas.
ਦੂਜੇ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ, ਗੁਆਂਢੀਆਂ ਲਈ “them” ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਅਸੀਂ “them” ਨੂੰ “whom” ਵਿੱਚ ਬਦਲ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਫਿਰ “whom we like very much” ਵਾਲਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ “neighbours” ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਲਗਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਵਾਧੂ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਕਾਮਿਆਂ (commas) ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
Easy trick to remember: If the second sentence has him, her or them, use whom to join the sentences.
ਜੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ him, her ਜਾਂ them ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਵਾਕ ਜੋੜਨ ਲਈ whom ਵਰਤੋ।
Rule 3: Joining Two Sentences with ‘Which’
Which’ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ
Use of ‘Which’
The relative pronoun which is used to join two sentences. We use which only for things and animals — never for persons. When the second sentence talks about a thing with the word it, we join both sentences with which.
There are two types of joining with “which”.
“which” ਨਾਲ ਵਾਕ ਜੋੜਨ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਹਨ।
Type I: In this type, the “which” part comes just after the noun. It tells us which thing we are talking about. No commas are used here.
- This is the picture. It was painted by my sister.
ਇਹ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਹੈ। ਇਸਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੀ ਭੈਣ ਨੇ ਬਣਾਇਆ। - This is the picture which was painted by my sister.
ਇਹ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮੇਰੀ ਭੈਣ ਨੇ ਬਣਾਈ। - This is the building. It was built in a single month.
ਇਹ ਇਮਾਰਤ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਣੀ। - This is the building which was built in a single month.
ਇਹ ਇਮਾਰਤ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਇੱਕ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਣੀ।
In these examples, the word “It” becomes “which”. Then this part is placed just after “the picture” and “the building”. One sentence is ready. No commas are needed because “which was painted by my sister” tells us exactly which picture we are talking about. It is necessary information.
ਕਾਮਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿਉਂਕੇ “which was painted by my sister” ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ। ਇਹ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਹੈ।
Type II: In this type, the “which” part gives extra information about the noun. So we put it between two commas.
ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ, “which” ਵਾਲਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ noun ਬਾਰੇ ਵਾਧੂ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਕਾਮਿਆਂ (commas) ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
- The watch has been found. It was stolen yesterday.
ਘੜੀ ਮਿਲ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਚੋਰੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ। - The watch, which was stolen yesterday, has been found.
ਘੜੀ, ਜੋ ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਚੋਰੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ, ਮਿਲ ਗਈ ਹੈ।
Here, we use commas because “which was stolen yesterday” is extra information. The main sentence already tells us that the watch has been found. The part about stealing only adds extra detail. So we put it between two commas.
Easy trick to remember: If the second sentence has it (for a thing or animal), use which to join the sentences.
ਜੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ it (ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ ਜਾਂ ਜਾਨਵਰ ਲਈ) ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਵਾਕ ਜੋੜਨ ਲਈ which ਵਰਤੋ।
Rule 4: Joining Two Sentences with ‘Whose’
‘Whose’ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ
Use of ‘Whose’
The relative pronoun whose is used to join two sentences. We use whose to show possession — that means when something belongs to someone. Whose can be used for persons, animals and things. When the second sentence has the words his, her or their, we join both sentences with whose.
There are two types of joining with “whose”.
“whose” ਨਾਲ ਵਾਕ ਜੋੜਨ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਹਨ।
Type I: In this type, the “whose” part comes just after the noun. No commas are used when the information is necessary.
- This is the woman. Her child was hurt.
ਇਹ ਉਹ ਔਰਤ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦਾ ਬੱਚਾ ਜ਼ਖਮੀ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। - This is the woman whose child was hurt.
ਇਹ ਉਹ ਔਰਤ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਦਾ ਬੱਚਾ ਜ਼ਖਮੀ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ।
Let us see how this joining is done. In the second sentence, the word “Her” is used for the woman. We change “Her” into “whose”. Then the part “whose child was hurt” is placed just after “the woman”. One sentence is ready. No commas are needed here because “whose child was hurt” tells us exactly which woman we are talking about.
ਦੂਜੇ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ, ਔਰਤ ਲਈ “Her” ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਅਸੀਂ “Her” ਨੂੰ “whose” ਵਿੱਚ ਬਦਲ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਫਿਰ “whose child was hurt” ਵਾਲਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ “the woman” ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਲਗਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Type II: In this type, the “whose” part gives extra information about the noun. So we put it between two commas.
ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ, “whose” ਵਾਲਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ noun ਬਾਰੇ ਵਾਧੂ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਕਾਮਿਆਂ (commas) ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
- The girls are staying with us. Their parents are abroad.
ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਪੇ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ। - The girls, whose parents are abroad, are staying with us.
ਕੁੜੀਆਂ, ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਪੇ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ, ਸਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
Here, we use commas because “whose parents are abroad” is extra information. The main sentence already tells us that the girls are staying with us. The part about the parents only adds extra detail. So we put it between two commas.
Easy trick to remember: If the second sentence has his, her or their, use whose to join the sentences.
ਜੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ his, her ਜਾਂ their ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਵਾਕ ਜੋੜਨ ਲਈ whose ਵਰਤੋ।
Rule 5: Joining Two Sentences with ‘That’ in Relative Pronouns
‘That’ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ
Use of ‘That’
The relative pronoun that is used to join two sentences. That is a very useful word because it can be used for persons, animals and things — for all three. But remember, we mostly use that after words like the, this, that, here is and there is.
ਪਰ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖੋ, ਅਸੀਂ that ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ the, this, that, here is ਅਤੇ there is ਵਰਗੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
Type I: In this type, the “that” part comes just after the noun. It tells us which person or thing we are talking about. No commas are used here.
- This is the building. Mr. Thakur built it.
ਇਹ ਇਮਾਰਤ ਹੈ। ਮਿਸਟਰ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨੇ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਬਣਾਇਆ। - This is the building that Mr. Thakur built.
ਇਹ ਉਹ ਇਮਾਰਤ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਿਸਟਰ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨੇ ਬਣਾਈ। - Here is the notebook. You lost the notebook yesterday.
ਇਹ ਨੋਟਬੁੱਕ ਹੈ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਇਹ ਨੋਟਬੁੱਕ ਗੁੰਮ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਸੀ। - Here is the notebook that you lost yesterday.
ਇਹ ਉਹ ਨੋਟਬੁੱਕ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਗੁੰਮ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ।
Let us see how this joining is done. In the first example, the word “it” is used for the building in the second sentence. We remove “it” and put that after “the building”. Then the sentence becomes “This is the building that Mr. Thakur built.” One sentence is ready.
ਪਹਿਲੀ ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ, ਦੂਜੇ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਮਾਰਤ ਲਈ “it” ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਅਸੀਂ “it” ਨੂੰ ਹਟਾ ਕੇ that ਨੂੰ “the building” ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਲਗਾ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਫਿਰ ਵਾਕ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ “This is the building that Mr. Thakur built.” ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਕ ਤਿਆਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
In the second example, the word “notebook” is repeated in both sentences. We remove the repeated word and put that after “the notebook”. Then the sentence becomes “Here is the notebook that you lost yesterday.” One sentence is ready.
ਫਿਰ ਵਾਕ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ “Here is the notebook that you lost yesterday.” ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਕ ਤਿਆਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
No commas are needed in these examples because the “that” part tells us exactly which building and which notebook we are talking about. It is necessary information.
One more point: When that is used for the object of the sentence, we can even remove it. For example, “This is the building Mr. Thakur built.” — this is also correct. But it is always safe to write that.
ਜਦੋਂ that ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਹਟਾ ਵੀ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਜਿਵੇਂ, “This is the building Mr. Thakur built.” — ਇਹ ਵੀ ਸਹੀ ਹੈ। ਪਰ that ਲਿਖਣਾ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਹੈ।
Easy trick to remember: If the sentence starts with This is, Here is, There is or has the before the noun, use that to join the sentences.
ਜੇ ਵਾਕ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ This is, Here is, There is ਨਾਲ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਨਾਂਵ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ the ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਵਾਕ ਜੋੜਨ ਲਈ that ਵਰਤੋ।
